The Minister for Women's Affairs, Jacinta Allan, announced a $963,617 Australian Research Council Linkage Grant to evaluate the Bracks Government's family violence reforms.

Speaking at the launch of 29 VicHealth funded projects to prevent violence against women, Ms Allan said the Linkage Grant would evaluate the Victorian family violence reforms by focusing on the effectiveness of the reforms in improving women's and children's safety.

The evaluation led by Dr Cathy Humphreys from Melbourne University, will look at he effectiveness of Victoria's service providers, including police, family violence workers and courts, at delivering assistance to the victims of family violence and dealing with offenders.

Ed Dabrowski, the Federal Director of the Shared Parenting Council of Australia said

What we find extraordinary here is that tens of millions of dollars a year is poured into Domestic violence studies and more studies on behalf of women and where violence against men is simply not an agenda item. To fund the most basic mens health initiatives, boys development programs in schools , mens suicide prevention for groups like DIDS and getting Dads back in touch with their children after being alienated by harsh and archaic Court orders is simply an impossibility

MEDIA RELEASE

BLACKSHIRTS CAMPAIGN - AN ACT OF 'URBAN TERRORISM'

President and spokesperson for the Joint Parenting Association, Mr Yuri Joakimidis said today, "The recent Family Court protest campaign engaged in by a group known as the 'Blackshirts' in Melbourne, Australia, should be seen as an act of urban terrorism against innocent parties in the campaign for family law reform in Australia".

"Whilst there are many aggrieved parties (especially innocent children) in the escalating incidence of Family Breakdown in Australia, for the sake of our children, law reform campaigns need to be addressed honestly and openly on the merits of their argument", Mr Joakimidis said.

The Victorian Attorney-General, Rob Hulls in writing to this group about their continuing practices are both appropriate and warranted.

"There is no place in Australia for this type of vigilante style campaign and we must seek peaceful means of restoring justice for children and respect for parents who are seeking continued involvement in the lives of their children after family breakdown, separation or divorce", Mr Joakimidis said.

In the words of the Deputy Prime Minister, John Anderson MP, "All of the old traditional views about the importance of secure environments for families were right and we have ignored it at the cost of far too many of our children...The warning signs are everywhere. Are we going to go on ignoring them or are we going to have an honest debate about it?"

"The process of administration of Family Breakdown in Australia is in urgent need of reform and must be rectified by the Federal Government as its next major policy reform in this country.

"Accordingly, we call upon the Prime Minister to look fairly at the societal problems that the process of divorce and separation is having on the 200 children who are removed by the Family Court from one of their parents(usually fathers) on a daily basis.

"The Blackshirts are a symptom of a system that is failing children, failing parents and failing the community in general. If we are going to have our children grow up in an environment that reinforces, equality, justice and fairness for all we can no longer continue on the path of effective disenfranchisement of such a significant proportion of our society", Mr Joakimidis said.

The institution of Marriage is currently under attack, birth rates are falling and men have engaged in a marriage strike - because the facts reveal that in Marriage, 1 in 2 fathers have a strong chance of losing their children, and in defacto relationships this grows to almost 2 in 3.

"By enshrining in Family Law in this country, every child's human right to have an equal relationship with both their mother and father, the frustration and destruction of such a significant (and growing) proportion of society will be arrested and society as a whole will benefit", Mr Joakimidis concluded.
